[Delia is outside. Jeans and black shirt and leather jacket, she doesn't look anything like a lady, sitting perched there on the fence looking at the horses.]

[late afternoon, getting cool, but she seems content just to stay there. It's the one thing in Milliways that reminds her of home. Not of court, but home. Eldorne, with it's hills and grasses and many, many horses.]

[she had been talking to Mithros earlier, a whispered apology as she stroked his neck and said, not today, lovely. Your mistress is angry with me, I can't ride you today..]

[but now the great warhorse has moved on, and she's just sitting there in the open air.]

Well, this is interesting. He leans against the nearest fencepost and lets his bag drop.

"You really make enemies that easily?"

Carry-on effect from Tortall. Treason just does very, very bad things to a girl's standing in society.

"I guess so, if you can't even ride their horses."

He leans over the fence and whistles a few times. A couple of the horses look at him, but none move in their direction.

"And they're not even all from Tortall, I'm sure.

It's not even that. I'm sure I could, perfectly well. But, they have enough people to look after them. And it's just Mithros at the moment.

"Mithros," he repeats, frowning a little.

"Is that Alanna's horse? I've heard her mention the name."

"Um. What happened? Or would you... rather not?"

He's a little more cautious these days about who he presses for information.

I told her I love her brother. She took great, great offence for some strange reason.

I'm still not entirely sure why.

Raguel stares at her.

"Thom's a difficult one to love, I'd think. Maybe she doesn't believe you."

Alanna told him herself that she doesn't trust Delia, but this seems the more diplomatic approach. Apparently, it's the day for it.

"Did you ask her why?" he tries.

No, not yet. She was a little too busy accusing me of loving misery.

He can't help laughing just a little at that.

"Well, that sounds familiar. What's your excuse?"

I've known him since I was twelve, and he's familiar. I know what to expect.

"And Alanna thinks you'll be miserable?" he asks, uncertainly.

"That doesn't sound like most versions of love that I hear about from people, but I do have kind of a different perspective."

"Well, you know. I haven't tried it out myself, or anything, so I can't really say I'm an expert. But I've heard from a lot of people."

He looks at her carefully, wondering how much of this she really means.

Never loved anyone else? I mean...not romantic love, but just never loved at all?

"Um. Well, that's different, I guess."

He looks inexplicably uncomfortable.

"The angel thing means it's. Complicated."

"Yeah, but we have different rules. It's not always clear what they are."

He looks down at his hands, letting one thumb run along a groove in the wood of the fence.

"Anyway, angels are supposed to love everyone. In theory. In practice I don't think it really works that way for all of us."

He looks up again at her sudden acceptance, but decides not to challenge it.

"So how does Thom feel about... all this?"
